How to Defeat Gelum Fast
ItzVexo's tutorial boss strategy — AoE telegraphs, critical hit exploitation, posture breaking, and optional skip vs reward tradeoff.
// Guide Summary
Gelum is the optional tutorial-area boss after the construct training gate. Beating him grants a Hogyoku fragment — valuable for late-game wishes. Red aura = unblockable AoE — dodge or flash step, never parry. Spam critical hits on cooldown to break posture fast. Create distance when overwhelmed — Gelum has no ranged attacks. Boss is skippable but worth learning parry timing on.
Why Fight Gelum?

After construct training in Fort Adams, the gates open to Gelum — an optional tutorial boss. You can skip him and continue to faction selection, saving 1–2 hours of learning.
The reward for defeating Gelum includes a Hogyoku fragment. Hogyoku fragments feed into the Hogyoku wish system for trait resets, ability rerolls, and other late-game quality-of-life options.
Multiple guides recommend fighting Gelum if you want early Hogyoku stock and parry practice. Skip if you want fastest race selection.
Key Tips
- ▸Optional but gives Hogyoku frag
- ▸Skip = faster to faction pick
- ▸Good parry practice boss
- ▸Fragment = late-game wishes
Red Aura AoE — Dodge Only

When Gelum is surrounded by a red aura, he is about to unleash a ground AoE. This attack cannot be blocked or parried — i-frames from dodging or flash step are required.
Gelum's pursuit is predictable: when he closes distance, the red-aura AoE is his primary catch-up tool. Read the telegraph, dodge sideways or backward, then punish.
Yellow-ring attacks elsewhere in VV are dodge-only as well. Gelum mixes blockable red-indicator swings with these unblockable AoE bursts.
Key Tips
- ▸Red aura = run/dodge
- ▸Cannot parry AoE
- ▸Flash step works
- ▸Punish after dodge
Critical Spam & Posture Break

The fastest Gelum kill loops critical attacks on cooldown. Crits have a high chance of breaking Gelum's block, draining his posture bar rapidly.
When posture breaks, follow with M1 strings for free damage. Rebind crit off mouse button 3 if needed — many players use R for heavy/crit.
Between crit windows, maintain awareness of red aura telegraphs. The fight is movement + timing + crit discipline, not raw stat checks.
- 1Crit on cooldown
- 2Watch for red aura
- 3Posture break → M1 punish
- 4Run if overwhelmed
Key Tips
- ▸Spam crits = fast posture break
- ▸Rebind crit to R if needed
- ▸M1 after guard break
- ▸No ranged = safe distance
